Good to be wrinkly!

Being a wrinkly/crumbly/(insert your insult of choice) has many drawbacks but some things are absolutely great.  One such thing is flexibility when it comes to holiday timings,

I've never taken August holidays.  Quite apart from the fact that it is the most expensive time of the year, I've always felt that colleagues with children or with spouses(spice?) that teach should have priority there.  Now I am retired I have no-one to consider but myself and I still prefer the quieter times of the year.

So over the past couple of weeks I have been planning a two week break for myself in October.  I want to visit the Eden project and various other lovely gardens in Cornwall.  I can't use B & Bs because disability means I need to know exactly what I am getting so I use Travelodges.  They are cheap and clean and if I decide to have a whole day in my room (sometimes essential) no-one minds.

I started by making a spreadsheet of the prices for every night in October for various Travelodges and found that the cheapest to get ten consecutive nights for me would be Bodmin.  That suits me - it's central Cornwall so I'll be able to get around.  As I say I am flexible on timing so I got a good deal. I've also booked three nights in Dorset so I can visit Amy.  I still need to find somewhere for one night on the way down as a six hour drive would be too much for me but so far accommodation is £401 which I think is pretty good, an average of £30.85 a night.

The next thing to look at is places to go and the best way to pay, but there's no hurry about booking those.

  1. I love a good vacation plan. Part of the fun is the research ahead of time mixed in with intentional gaps to take advantage of something to discover or just a good rest day. I look forward to reading more.

  2. Sounds great - it seems that Travelodges are a really good deal if you can book early. The weather is often better in September and October than it is in August... I'm sure that you're going to have a great time. Jx

  4. I'm a crumbling old wrinkly too and like not being tied to a timetable. I admire you for going on holiday alone, something I've never done, something to consider for the future though.

    1. I've often holidayed alone and now I really like it. The easiest way is to have things planned to do - I've sometimes booked craft workshops or spa days - but not every day of a holiday. Take courage - and a two or three day break for starters!

  5. Not entirely sure where you are, but if North then Gloucestershire may be a possible place to break up your journey overnight :) There is a Holiday Inn Express just off J12 of the M5 and a Travelodge about 2 miles from it. There's an Ibis just off J11A too.

  6. I admire you for being so adventurous. Our last holiday was in a caravan in 1978! Never been out of the country even - I'm like the peasant of a hundred years ago who rarely travelled far from their village! Home is important to us though so I'm not complaining.

Hope you have a lovely time and take a lot of photos on your travels.
