February

 This pandemic seems to be going on for ever but one day - one day! - we will be able to go out and socialise and do things!  I think it will be a few months before I resume even a little of my "normal" life and I want to make the most of this time to be ready to enjoy myself when that wonderful time comes. 

So, a project for February.  Twenty eight glorious days.  What to do with them?

Well. there's a project which is staring me in the face wherever I look.  It can't be avoided.  It's STUFF.  I've sorted quite a lot but I know there's plenty more which could go, so my aim for February is to have less stuff on 1st March than I have on 1st February. 

I'm going to try and get rid of one item for day one, two items for day two and so on to twenty eight items for day 28.

However, I'm not necessarily going to make 1st February my one item day.  Far too straightforward!  There will be a one item day but it might be 12th February whilst 2nd February could be a day for twenty five items to leave the premises.  However my days fall, 406 items should go before the month is through.  I've used this sort of crazy system before.  The advantage is that I can get rid of lots of stuff early whilst my enthusiasm is high and then as it gets harder to find items I can use the smaller daily targets.

  1. You can do it! I have four boxes (clothes & books) waiting for the charity shops re open - then yesterday a local group were actually asking for such items to support a cancer charity. I'm delivering them tomorrow. But I have to be "in the mood" for sorting. There's still too much in this house, we cannot take it all into retirement!

  2. perfect plan, I too am looking around, but I have reduced my stuff year on year, so there is not much to get rid of, but I will still look and get the neat tidy look I am craving.

  3. That is a good idea. I am also looking to declutter but I really need the charity shops to re-open as I have nowhere to store everything in one place so I am leaving things where they are until then. I have managed to get rid of 105 items that I have given to other people, used up or was to worn to be donated so was binned.

  5. Love your plan! I try to get rid of at least one thing a day, and I've been doing it for a while. I don't count incoming mail, but I regularly go through older paperwork & the like to get rid of things. And kids junk. The kids stuff seems to multiply in their rooms!

I'm hoping to use thee time between me being officially done with work (5:30 most days), taking pup fo rhis walk, and when my husband gets home at 7:00 to get a 30-45 minutes power clean/sort/purge etc. I figure that will add no less than 2 hours of organization time per week, and by the end of March when the weather should start getting better, we can tackle some more meaningful projects. Of course this week when Iwan tot start I have two evening meetings.

  7. I managed to get rid of 800 books, 10 per day, a few years ago. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done because I love books. This past week, Tommy sorted from hangers 10 shirts, a suit and two jackets. We will continue with his stuff and mine.

  8. Neat idea. This month I head into the basement to declutter. I am hoping to rid myself of more "stuff".

    We admire your discipline.

    Sadly, we lack most forms of discipline and removing items from our daily lives would be something we should love in theory but, in practice, never happens. The rule of one thing in and at least two out has always appealed but never materialised. And, to make matters worse, when things do come in, they seem, as if by magic, to multiply overnight.

    However, we can claim to recycle crime thrillers. It's a start!

  10. There's a special kind of joy in allowing oneself to break the rules imposed by self-discipline, while still adhering to the basic task. I'm with you on the numbers. I have what seems to be thousands of photographs. I stopped looking through my albums years ago because there are too many of them and some are falling it bits anyway so I need to deal with them. And then there are the loose photographs that are in (labelled) envelopes and (unlabelled) boxes. I meant to do it for Lent - that way in 40 days I could get rid of over 800. I got impatient and thought, I know, February, one a day, right? And then I got more impatient and got rid of two on 31 January, and have been filleting out one, two, or three each day since. I can manage one or two fairly easily, so it'll be interesting to see if I can make it through either to the end of February or to the end of Lent, which should be both of course.   11. It's a great idea! I have tried to identify item a to cull and managed a few over the last few months although most of them are still sitting in the spare room! Good Luck with it!
